Mealwise privacy policy
Mealwise keeps your data on your phone. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The only thing the app ever sends over the internet is a barcode number, when you choose to look a product up.
What Mealwise stores, and where
Everything you log stays in the app on your phone: your meals (name, foods, carbs and time), the insulin doses recorded with them, your saved meals, your settings, and the photos you attach to meals.
For each meal, Mealwise also keeps a short summary of what your glucose did in the three hours after it: the starting value, the peak, the lowest value and the time in range. The full stream of glucose readings is read from Apple Health while the app is open and is not copied into the app's storage.
None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. We have no server and cannot see your data.
Apple Health
If you connect Apple Health, Mealwise asks to read two kinds of data: blood glucose and insulin delivery. It uses them only to show what happened after your meals and to record the dose taken with a meal.
Mealwise does not write to Apple Health. It does not use health data for advertising or marketing, does not share it with third parties, and does not store it in iCloud. The meal log, which contains results worked out from your glucose, is kept out of iCloud and device backups.
You can withdraw access at any time in the Health app under Sharing, or in Settings under Health.
Camera and photos
The camera is used to take a photo of a meal or to scan a barcode. Photos are read on your phone by the image classifier built into iOS to name the foods in them. Photos are never uploaded.
Meal photos are saved in the app's own folder. Unlike the meal log, they are included in your device backup if you use one.
Barcode lookups
When you scan or type a barcode, Mealwise sends that barcode number to Open Food Facts, an open food database, to fetch the product's nutrition label. The request also carries the app's name and version and our contact address, as that service asks of every app. As with any internet request, the service can see your IP address.
No meal, glucose, insulin or account information is sent. Open Food Facts' own privacy policy is at world.openfoodfacts.org/privacy.
Exports
You can export your meal log or all of your data from the You tab. An export is a file handed to the iOS share sheet; where it goes from there is up to you. Exports do not include photos or raw glucose readings.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on your phone until you remove it. You can delete a single meal or saved meal at any time, or erase everything from the You tab. Deleting the app also deletes all of its data.
Because the meal log is not backed up, it does not move to a new phone by itself. Export it first if you want to keep a copy.
Children
Mealwise is not directed at children under 13. A parent or carer can use it to log meals for a child.
